DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION 

The Recreation Department provides professional services, programs, and facilities that can be enjoyed safely to promote a higher quality of life for all residents and visitors of the City of Lake Worth.

 OBJECTIVES 

  •  To improve the athletic programs within the City by establishing rules and procedures given by national governing bodies and providing officials and supervision in accordance with these regulations.
  •  To provide pleasurable and constructive leisure opportunities for residents of all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic classes.
  •  To improve and meet national standards of service for our Leisure Services Department by maintaining a safe, professional, and competent staff by adding training, supervision and qualified staff to our departments.
  •  To improve staff morale by offering support from all levels of management, maintaining positive two way communications, and empowering the staff in decision making.
  • To maintain, upgrade, and meet national standards on equipment and facilities by allocating additional funds by setting up a reserve fund, generating additional revenue and development of preventive maintenance plans.
  •  To strengthen neighborhood and community life by providing residents with the opportunity to work on special projects or programs in a volunteer service, role, thus promoting civic pride and morale and neighborhood unity.
  •  To improve the physical environment, and to make the community a more attractive place to live, by providing a well designed and carefully maintained network of programs and services.
  •  To contribute directly to a positive physical, emotional, and social growth for the residents of our community through a varied range of leisure experiences and involvement.
  •  To prevent or minimize antisocial behavior or destructive uses of leisure, such as gang behavior, drug and alcohol abuse by providing appealing and challenging programs under positive leadership that offer young people desirable and enjoyable alternatives.
  •  To improve intergroup relations among residents of different ethnic, religious, or social backgrounds, and to promote desirable human values, including respect for the dignity and worth of all people, as well as tolerance for diversity and varying lifestyles.
  •  To help strengthen and maintain economic health of our community by stimulating the growth of industry, providing culture, sports and other attractions that promote spending in the community and enhancing residential development by improving neighborhoods.
  •  To promote community safety by offering activities such as swimming lessons and sports in supervised settings, controlling or limiting high risk activities & teaching safety principles.
  •  To provide vocational counseling and workshops for the socially and economic disadvantage.
  •  To enrich cultural life by presenting services and special events in the fine and performing arts: arts and crafts, painting and music, drama and dance.
  •  To stimulate full public awareness of the importance of leisure as a way of benefiting the community and fulfilling human potential; and to promote education for leisure, as a way of benefiting the community and fulfilling potential; and to promote education for leisure in cooperation with other community agencies.
