The
GPIRB is a very smart beacon because of its onboard GPS engine.
When the GPIRB is activated, the GPS locates itself and loads its
current position digitally into the transmission "sentence"
for broadcast to the satellites. Once loaded the GPS shuts down
to conserve energy.
Every
20 minutes, it will restart, relocate itself, load the current position
and then shutdown again.
